However, the more important reasons are it would be journalistically unethical, and I don’t really have a favorite as there are so many ethnicities, ambiences, price levels and locations. On the other hand, if anyone asks me, “Where would you go to get a good hamburger? ” I usually recommend the Ithaca Ale House as being in my “top five” for having a variety of perfectly cooked, innovative, reasonably priced burgers. Including their weekly burger special, they offer a half- dozen and they’re all good.

In case you haven’t heard, the Ale House recently moved from “Rrestaurant Row” on Aurora Street to near the corner of State and Aurora Streets. This incarnation is about double the size, although, as with many restaurants these days, the menu offerings have been reduced. I think of the interior as minimalist industrial with track and pendant lighting. As for the food, the owner says that while they are still focused on making their burgers great, they’ve added more healthy and vegetarian options. They also welcomed a new chef, David Schaap from the New York City restaurant The Butcher’s Daughter, an all-vegetarian restaurant. His résumé includes running other restaurants in the city as well, including barbecue, giving him a diverse culinary background coming to Ithaca.

I once ordered the “Chicken Wings” ($18) from the “Smaller Plates” part of the menu. I think the cooks serve portions based on weight, trying to max up with about one pound. They were covered in a relatively light breaded crust and came with a few fresh carrot and celery sticks with a choice of blue cheese or ranch dip. I chose the blue cheese and was glad I did, as it had bits of cheese incorporated. If you order the wings, you’ll have a choice of about a half- dozen sauces.

Colonial Style House Plans, Floor Plans & Designs

colony house design

Author Louisa May Alcott's own home, Orchard House (above) in Massachusetts, built around 1650 and where she wrote and set Little Women, is a perfect example of the style. A swathe of Colonial Revival houses were built from the 19th century onwards, demonstrating that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. All house plans and images on DFD websites are protected under Federal and International Copyright Law.

The site also comes with a one-bed guest property, which is enclosed in glass.

Take a look at the defining features of the colonial-style house and learn what makes this home style so popular today. Below we showcase a series of different colonial houses, mostly the saltbox style which stems from the British colonial style. While most are historic, the second example is a new house built in the colonial style. While some people consider it a pro of a Colonial house plan design, others might find the magnificent entry overbearing and showy and therefore a con. And while it's true that many 2-story Colonial homes are larger, the cost of heating and air conditioning that additional space may be deal breaker for some over time.

Plan: #206-1004

colony house design

You'll find Colonial homes dating back to the 1700s on the east coast, and they're easy to pick out with their 2-story plan and symmetrical façade. Travel west of the Mississippi River and you immediately notice them disappearing as most Colonial houses are built in the north and southeast areas of the county. Over time, the Colonial house plan style became distinct through its use of geometry, and different regions of the United States added their own tweaks to provide relief from the climate. Colonial style homes encompass a formal style reflective of the US Colonial period in the 17th century.

This places the stairway as a central, dominant design element within the structure. A colonial home usually has the front door placed directly in the center of the front wall, opening right onto the staircase area. As a result of the infrastructure and materials available during their namesake era, traditional American Colonial homes are fairly simple. Similar to the homes colonists lived in back in England, they’re rectangular, typically two stories, and fairly symmetrical.

The centrally located staircase makes it difficult to have an open concept floor plan as many people are building today so that can be considered a con as well. The grand impression as you enter a Colonial home design is typically magnificent and if you're looking to make a statement with your family and friends, you'll definitely find it in this home plan style. Because Colonial house plans feature larger separated rooms, you'll find that they are typically larger in size with the bedrooms located on the second level. Colonial homes also tend to have beautiful, decorative staircases that are seen as you enter the home leaving a lasting impression on guests. They're always at least two stories, and the staircase to the second and third floors usually bisects the home down the center.

The colonial house style has seen a revival in recent years, and the design has been refreshed for the modern era, whilst still holding onto it’s classic characteristics. The design generally encourages informal gatherings with spacious layouts and welcoming spaces. Interiors have always been Vivienne's passion – from bold and bright to Scandi white. After studying at Leeds University, she worked at the Financial Times, before moving to Radio Times. She did an interior design course and then worked for Homes & Gardens, Country Living and House Beautiful. She worked on Country Homes & Interiors for 15 years, before returning to Homes & Gardens as houses editor four years ago.

What are Colonial Style Floor Plans?

If you’ve ever dreamed of owning a home with an up-to-date interior hidden by a stunning brick facade, it’s never been easier to make this vision a reality. Keep reading for the best colonial house ideas that will show you how to preserve your home’s traditional charm in the modern era. The most common type of colonial architecture in the USA is British colonial architecture which makes since given the US was a British Colony for approximately 200 years.

The bold beige facade puts on display an elegant running motif of beautiful Pella windows with slender black louvered plantation shutters. The designed spaces of this house, created by Deborah Alsup Interiors back in 2010, are nothing short of elegant, sophisticated, and, most importantly, intimate. Above is a very classic British colonial style house in Nantucket, MA (a really great place to visit BTW). Notice the steep gabled roof, abruptly ending eaves, exterior shutters and the symmetrical rectangle design – all elements of British colonial architecture in the USA.

Designer Mark Hermogeno paid tribute to Silver Queen Susanna Bransford Emery-Holmes in the kitchen, butler’s pantry, family room, powder room, and mudroom. “We had thought, What if she actually came back to life and asked us to remodel the space? They brought in plenty of glitz and glamour befitting the Silver Queen. “We wanted to concentrate on polished nickels and polished chromes to get that silver feel back in,” he says of the fixtures, hardware, and lighting by Kohler and Kallista. Hermogeno and designer Lynette Chin brought in a mix of vintage and new furnishings in the family room, incorporating performance fabrics for durability. “[We made] sure that it was a really usable room, that it didn’t just look nice,” Hermogeno says.

Not only are they great for adding a touch of character to your outdoor walkways, but they can also be the perfect way to direct guests where you want them to go. If you’re looking to modernize an old colonial house, there are some great decorating ideas out there. Homeowners can give their modern colonial house an updated look while still preserving that classic, rustic feel. You can still find colonial home plans inspired by architecture from centuries past. Camden, Maine is a must-see town if ever touring the Eastern seaboard, USA. It is touristy, but the tourist dollars make it possible to maintain such a beautiful town and the many colonial houses that pepper the streets.

French colonial houses tend to have wide overhangs that are hipped or side-gabled, with sharply pitched roofs. Often, there is a “French” door in every room that leads to the outside. The French colonial can be seen in areas of the United States with a historically strong French influence, such as Louisiana. Heat your EasyPress or heat press to 285 degrees, and then press the iron-on to the kraft board (use the time recommended for your specific brand of iron-on – mine was 30 seconds). Change the black lines to score lines, and attach the two layers. Select all of the remaining icing layers, and use the Attach Tool so that all of the elements will cut in place as you have them arranged here on the canvas.

It wasn’t until we had some little boys over to play that one egg ended up crushed, cause, you know, BOYS. For the door, I cut out an open panel to let the girls have a spot to look through while in the house. To give it a personalized touch, I used contact paper so my girls could create a little winter scene. I sealed it with a backside of contact paper and glued it to the back of the door. Gather some cardboard and ruler and start drawing out your houses.

Have any available older kids help with the construction while the younger kids (or overly obsessive adults) can focus on fine-tuning the decorations. Remember, gingerbread houses can never have too much confectionary bling. Cover a toilet paper size cardboard roll with the gingerbread house wrap. The decorations are grouped so that you can move them all at once – place them over to the side of the gingerbread house base, and then click on “Ungroup” to separate the elements. Create a fun modern color scheme with pink frosting and green sour straps. Peppermint candy shingles and candy cane siding add an extra fun touch. Since I’d put so much work into it, we weren’t about to take it down right afterward. Together, we spruced it up to turn it into another cardboard gingerbread house. Because I’m a bit of a hoarder, not really, just an avid “repurposer”, we were able to use the chimney and fireplace we’d created the first time around. For the chimney, I used a white square cardboard box. It was easy to cut the bottom at the angle of the roof. Then, my oldest daughter helped me to paint the stone look of it.

Start with the Good Housekeeping Test Kitchen's recipe for gingerbread house cookie dough and royal icing, and from there you can go as traditional or as unique as you want. If you're looking for a little design inspiration, we've rounded up dozens of gingerbread house ideas that run the gamut from classic to modern. Whether you're a novice baker or an expert dessert aficionado, these sweet ideas are sure to help you build an epic gingerbread house this Christmas. To make our cardboard house, I made paper templates by drawing shapes for the walls, roof, doors and windows on a piece of paper. I cut those out and then traced them on to a thick piece of cardboard and cut those pieces out. For my daughter’s 6th birthday, I made a Haunted Cardboard house for the birthday party.

The display at Fairmont San Francisco is so massive, pastry chefs need to start baking the gingerbread in July! However simple or intricate you decide to make it is your decision, just adjust the project to suit your skill level and OCD tendencies — we certainly won’t judge. And even though the components are technically edible, remember that a gingerbread house is mostly for decoration — nobody really wants to eat something that’s sat out on display for days, or longer. To make a smaller house, decorate only the bottom half of the gingerbread house wrap.

Just be sure to keep the icing covered when it’s not in use. Royal icing dries quickly, so keep the surface covered with a layer of plastic wrap or store the icing in sealed piping bags. Then, use a white paint pen to draw the details of the gingerbread house on the rectangle wrap shape. A typical gingerbread house has doors and windows with lots of rounded edges, as well as fun, bouncy, scalloped edges and lots of details!. Once everything is done cutting, go back to your Design Space canvas again and re-group all of the gingerbread house pieces and layers. Take a basic gingerbread house to the next level with an edible sugar glass star and intricately piped icing decorations.

For the handle, I knew I wanted to make it able to turn and “lock” into position. Below is what I came up with based on what I had on hand. My motto is generally to use what I have rather than look to buy something. I used a toilet paper roll and two wooden dowels I had for cake stability or some other craft project. It was easy enough to cut the hole for the toilet paper roll and holes for the sticks that would keep the door in place. The problem was that the toilet paper roll wasn’t strong enough on the edge now to be crushed.

Just design your gingerbread house with a white paint pen then add a touch of color for gumdrops, peppermints, candy canes, and whatnot. Finish off your house design with some landscaping. Decorate happy little gingerbread people to complete the scene. You can use leftover royal icing to pipe small details or follow this step-by-step guide of basic decorating techniques for extra-festive gingerbread folks. To add the roof panels, pipe icing along the top of the walls. Place the roof panels and support them while the icing sets (again, only a few minutes if you’re using royal icing).

Measure the piece of cardboard and mark the exact center of the top of your board. Then mark the board at the roughly 1/3 point (where you want your roof pitch to end). This will assist you in getting the roof angle exactly perfect. Houses can be assembled directly onto a plate or cake stand, but if you’re making many or want a portable choice, foil-wrapped cardboard makes a great base. Cut a circle a bit larger than the house from corrugated cardboard and wrap in a layer of heavy-duty aluminum foil. Heidi Kundin has captivated the hearts of millions with her colorful and inspiring approach to crafting, celebrations, and family fun.

This is ideal if you’re building a complicated design or if you want to display your gingerbread house for a long time. The whole scene glistens with a fresh dusting of Sparkling Sugar. When the roof ridge glue is set, remove the clips, and glue the walls of the second half of the gingerbread house into place. Print the templates on sturdy paper and glue onto your cardboard. Carefully cut along the template lines using a craft knife or scissors. Obviously, a cozy Cardboard Gingerbread house isn’t much without a roaring stone fireplace.

We decided it would be more fun to use colourful scraps of foam and ribbon doors and windows. I’m sure there is some rationale behind this kind of hands on design but really, don’t get me started on the lack of real world technological preparation I got in school.

Make Your Own Cardboard Gingerbread House

I used Tombow paper glue, and it holds and dries quickly, so it doesn’t take long. You could also opt to use a hot glue gun, but I like the few extra seconds of working time that the Tombow glue gives me. You only need to decorate these two panels here because the roof flap will be covered up by the additional roof pieces that you will cut in a moment, and the other panel is the bottom of the house. Next, upload the “Icing Decorations” file and add it to the canvas.

Supplies Needed to Make Cardboard Gingerbread Houses:

I’ve found it’s quite easy to cut at the corners by running a razor down through it. For our adorable gingerbread house craft, you’ll first want to print our gingerbread house template on brown cardstock. I gathered rainbow-colored beads, some string, lots of glue, and markers. I even created paper gumdrops using construction paper and a hole punch for the kids to decorate their houses with. I folded the construction paper into strips in order to make as many gumdrops as quickly as possible.

CRAFTEGORIES

I hope this easy craft project gives you the same result! Remember to pin this post on Pinterest in order to refer back to it as you work. I also added paint pens and a tub of decorating embellishments I found right before the party for extra Christmas cheer. Apply a line of caulk to the roofline, door, and windows to mimic the look of frosting. If you want the look of a snow-covered roof, apply the caulk liberally using a flat application tip (or cut your tip at an angle).

But an edible gingerbread house is too much for hungry guests. Take a close look at the two-story building and you can see where visitors pulled off gumdrops or Christmas tree marshmallows and even pulled off bits of gingerbread. Built right, your gingerbread house could last for years. And if anyone starts nibbling a little too much on your pretzel porch or fondant beer cooler, you can always add that dinosaur. If you want your gingerbread house to double as a holiday air freshener, bump up the spices — a lot.

There were cut off corner pieces needing to be repurposed, so I glued them to the corners as shelves. In the below photo, you can hopefully see I used some bent cardboard as roof supports to keep it solidly in place. It was easy enough to then tuck the light strings into the open spots. As I was making these adorable little cardboard gingerbread houses, I was thinking that I don’t know if I’ve ever really talked about what I used to do for a job before this.

How to Assemble the Cardboard Gingerbread House

Add windows, doors, and other details using the white chalk pen. Turn the cardboard pieces over and glue small pieces of tracing paper over the back of the windows and doors. This will make the houses glow and stop you from seeing the battery operated candle inside. Next, plan to make plenty of royal icing — it’s nothing more than a basic combination of powdered sugar and egg whites.

Cardboard Gingerbread House Craft

We have quite a few gingerbread crafts here on my blog, and this one is always a favourite with my toddlers and preschoolers. I’ve always made decorating a gingerbread house an annual tradition with my own kids, but I don’t with my daycare hooligans because I don’t want them having all that candy at their fingertips. Let your creativity shine as you decorate your cardboard gingerbread house.

I like to use these sewing clips on the inside of the roof ridge line to hold everything in place while the glue dries. Upload the “Gingerbread House – Roof” file and add it to the canvas. Save your project in Cricut Design Space and then click to start a new canvas. Once you have all of your decorations in place where you want them, delete all of the unused icing elements. This SVG file will create a sweet gingerbread cottage that measures approximately 7.25″ x 5″ x 6″ h. This sugar cookie house is the product of "all things merry and bright."

Re-roll the excess dough to cut any remaining shapes, or use it to make extras like gingerbread people. I came up with the idea for a cardboard gingerbread house one year, and decorating it was just as much fun as decorating a real one. Plus, they each got to take one home and display it for the season at their house.

Finish with a thick line of icing along the top where the roof panels meet. Allow the icing to fully set in a dry place before adding decorations. If you’re decorating with kids, it helps to assemble the houses the day before, so they are fully stable and ready to pile on the candy.

If you're already dreading the post-creation sugar high, then use an assortment of nuts and salty snacks in place of candy. No magic needed to make this house fit for a fairy — just some graham crackers and a fruit rollup. The only thing explosive about these cake bombs is the delicious taste of gingerbread cake beneath the icing shell. Those without a strong sweet tooth will appreciate this house. Decorated with almonds, macadamias and walnuts, this gingerbread residence is packed with protein. With red sour belt shingles and Tootsie Roll siding, this edible rustic log cabin sets the scene for the ultimate sugar-filled winter wonderland.

Then, locate the gingerbread house base layers in the side panel, and click on the eyeball icons to turn off visibility. It was a lot of fun to make – lots of fine motor action – and it will keep for years. Much longer than any candy house your kids could ever make. I blew out the innards and then coated it in Mod Podge to seal it and give it some added strength. After that, I stuck the egg into the end of the toilet paper roll. Looking back, I admit it does seem rather odd, but it worked perfectly and lasted a really really long time.

You’ll need a few baking basics like a rolling pin, parchment paper, a thin spatula, a sharp knife, and piping bags. You’ll also need an electric mixer for the royal icing. If you plan to build a house just for display, appearance and aroma are more important than flavor, so choose a stiffer dough like this Construction Gingerbread. It has the flavor and aroma of a cookie meant for munching, but with a texture that’s a bit firmer and tougher than other recipes.

I used some super hard corner cardboard pieces (the kind that comes with appliances or furniture) as the roof seam. Design the roof of the gingerbread house with a white paint pen, too. Find the layer for the folding tabs, change the black cut line to score lines, and then attach the score lines to the gingerbread house base like you did in the previous steps. Now, when you click “Make It,” it will cut and score all of these layers together, in place, on the same mat. There are gingerbread houses you can look at, and then there are gingerbread houses you can walk into.

The great thing about this gingerbread activity is that no-one was squabbling over the candy and they weren’t all hopped up on sugar at the end of the morning. To start, I poured a couple of colours of brown paint, and the hooligans covered the sides and the roof of the house. Insert the strips of cardboard into the slots at the bottom of the houses, ensuring they are flush. We are always on the hunt for creative, passionate, and driven individuals to work with, so whether you're a crafter, photographer, or anyone in between, feel free to contact us at The staff tries to replenish as many missing candies as it can to keep the magic alive throughout the holiday season. Why so many Mexicans revile the Colonial Californiano architectural hybrid that spread from SoCal

In the 17th century, the British shared a taste for classically inspired designs from ancient Greeks and Romans, as evidenced by pilasters or columns around the door and shutters around the windows. Like French Colonial and Georgian architecture, symmetry was key and achieved by exacting placement of the door in the center, framed by symmetrical windows placed on two stories of the home. You can spot a Dutch Colonial home by its "Dutch roof." It has a gambrel roof, which is symmetrical and sloping on each side. Dutch Colonial homes are wide, with roofs featuring long eaves extending over the sides, making the house look barn-like. The home is constructed of stone or brick, while the doors and window shutters are made of wood. The style was popularized in the 1700s and remained a classic style in the American Northeast.

When America celebrated its centennial in the late 1800s, the Colonial Revival architectural style emerged as a nod to the country's humble Colonial beginnings but was elevated with Victorian-era architectural stylings. Colonial Revival took off in the early 20th century featuring simple layouts, symmetrical window designs, and gabled, hip, or gambrel roofs combined with ornate Victorian features, porticos, moldings, and large windows. Known for their white stucco walls, red clay roof tiles, wooden beams, and rustic appearance, Spanish Colonial homes are extremely popular throughout the American Southeast, Southwest, and California. Most Spanish Colonial homes have some kind of interior or exterior courtyard, usually in the center of the house.

Features of Colonial House Plans

Colonials can also have dormers, sunrooms, or other smaller additions to the sides of the home. They are frequently found in the Northeast and Southeast and are a popular style still built to this day. They often have small front porches and double-pitched roofs with small dormer windows—or roofed windows set on the sloped side of a roof. Tell them that the style and term originated from the word “bengala,” which referred to homes built in the style of the Bengal region of India.

Some colonial house plans differ from symmetry, showcasing an asymmetrical design where one aspect varies. Inspired by high modernist European architects like Le Corbusier and Ludwig Meis van der Rohe, the midcentury modern movement in American houses began in the 1940s and became extremely popular. Common features include minimalist design with no ornamentation, single-story construction, large picture windows, flat roofs, and an attempt to blend the natural surroundings into the home’s design. Interiors usually have open layouts with few walls separating the space, allowing rooms to blend into one another.

Why are colonial homes popular?

At The Plan Collection, you’ll find colonial floor plans and designs that range in size from small house plans to luxury home plans. No matter your style or budget, you’ll find a variety of one-of-a-kind colonial home floor plans here. Inspired by the architecture of Spain, Spanish-style homes generally have low-slung roofs, terracotta roof tiles, and white plaster walls.

This signature house style is one of the most popular property styles in the US due to its innate charm and period character. The above home balances historic preservation with enjoying present-day comforts. It’s obviously been renovated over the years to it’s current tasteful interior, yet there are many remnants of historic interior elements. Designer Stephanie Hatten updated the Gatehouse Kitchen, turning it into an airy English-country-inspired space. An eye-catching natural stone by Walker Zanger was selected for the counters and backsplash, and the space was outfitted with the latest Monogram appliances. Samatha Williams’s Tearoom in the Gatehouse is brimming with vintage charm and elegant accents.

One of the defining characteristics ofcolonial home designs lies in their decorated entryways. Colonial mansion floor plans regularly exude a feel of magnificence with spacious decks and elegant pillars. Moreover, captivating shutters or flower boxes add an extra layer of charm to these classic homes.

Hermogeno and designer Lynette Chin brought in a mix of vintage and new furnishings in the family room, incorporating performance fabrics for durability. “[We made] sure that it was a really usable room, that it didn’t just look nice,” Hermogeno says. The landmark mansion was built in 1902 by architect Joseph J. Blick for Gertrude Potter Daniels, who paid $15,000 for the shingle-style home. In 1905, Susanna Bransford Emery-Holmes—known as the Silver Queen thanks to the source of her late husband’s fortune—purchased the home and soon made it her own.
